The launch went very well last night of the Art Off the Map Exhibition at the Art Sales and Rental Gallery, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia . The Exhibition is on from May 2 to May 25 at 1723 Hollis Street, Halifax. The Halifax ArtMap can be found online at halifaxartmap.com .
I was fortunate enough to sell one of my new images, "Figmenta imaginationis series 2" (latin for figments of the imagination). It brings together my fascination with doorways, caves, stone work and cemeterial art. It represents a vision of a portal to another place in time and space, perhaps subterranean or otherworldly. At another level the image is also about revisioning, appropriation, re-use and reconstruction.
The photograph is a photomontage of four separate images 1) a cave near Sheet Harbour, Nova Scotia, 2) the lintel and jamb stonework around a colourful doorway being preserved during the demolition of the former Sweet Basil's restaurant across from Historic Properties in Halifax, and 3) two relief sculptures on two stone grave monuments in Camp Hill Cemetery in Halifax.
In the past, like most photographers, I've focused on a subject, photographically recreating it in a specific time and place. The print characterizes a new direction for my work. One that plays with creating new engaging images from different times and different spaces.
