Memento Mori (Remember Death) Group Show Artist talk at ViewPoint Gallery. What does Memento Mori mean to you? My image below, "Tuam Ipsam Viva Quia Tuam Ipsam Oppetes Mortem" (Live your own life
for you will die you own death - Latin Proverb, my addition to the winged skull) is a composite of six images with 20 layers and shows two skeletons embracing a heart, bracketed top and bottom with winged heads (taken from Victorian cemetery headstone reliefs) symbolic of the soul ascending from the spent body. The diagonally opposite skulls are symbols of death (also from Victorian headstones) and are transparent conveying the ephemeral nature of life and death. The two skeletons embracing a heart (a symbol of love, joy and life) represent a celebration in the death transition. The background image is from the underground Catacombs of Paris where over 6 million skeletons and interred. The overall image suggests that remembering death necessitates that we must celebrate life. Both are part of a larger process based on the belief that life and death are essential parts of the physical experience we spiritual beings have as part of our journey.
